Tattoo Design Galleries: What to Look For

by Zac Parker

So, you're seriously considering 'getting inked' and having your very first tattoo done? If this is you, then chances are you've already checked out the internet in your search for good websites jam-packed full of tattoo designs to provide you with the inspiration you need to make the right design decision for your tattoo. If you have already tried searching for online tattoo design galleries, then you no doubt already know that there are literally thousands of design gallery websites for you to explore. Sure, that may sound nice if you have all the time in the world to make a design decision, however we're pretty sure you want to quickly find the very best tattoo galleries online to help you make your search a little easier. Now we'll show you how to find good tattoo design websites.

Key Characteristics of a Good Online Tattoo Design Gallery
As you know, the internet is home to so many tattoo design galleries, however many of them aren't worth the cyber space they inhabit! So, how do you determine whether a design gallery is worth your time? Here are the key characteristics of a good online tattoo design gallery:

* The site is operated by professionals or enthusiasts:
You're getting a tattoo and it's a permanent decision. It's not like you can simply erase a tattoo once it has been superimposed onto your skin. It's a serious decision with lifelong consequences - unless of course you are brave enough to have the painful, laser procedure required to remove a tattoo. In checking out tattoo design websites, look for sites that are owned and operated by tattoo artists or enthusiasts. You want to deal with people who actually know all about tattoos and the serious considerations you must think about prior to making that all-important trip to the tattoo parlor.

* How popular is the website:
If the owners and operators are serious about their online tattoo gallery, they will do everything they can to make the site a hit with all of the people using the internet who are interested in tattoos. If you discover an online tattoo design gallery that is really popular, there is a very good reason for it! Chances are, such a tattoo website will be worth your time.

* Plenty of designs:
The obvious characteristic of a good online tattoo design gallery is the range of designs available on the website. Making a design decision will take a lot of time, so the more designs a tattoo gallery has for you to choose from, the better. Good tattoo related websites will be adding to their gallery on a weekly or daily basis.

* Plenty of good information:
As you know, getting a tattoo is a serious step to take, so education is critical. You need to know what you're getting yourself in for when you are considering whether or not to "get inked". A good online tattoo design gallery will contain plenty of informative articles about getting a tattoo. After all, getting a tattoo is a medical procedure and there are risks, so ensuring you are totally informed is critical, and that is why a good tattoo design gallery will provide you with plenty of informative material.

Another Important Point about Tattoo Design Galleries
You've heard of the saying, "you get what you pay for," right? The same goes when it comes to tattoo design galleries. As we've already mentioned several times in this article, do any internet search for tattoo design galleries, and it will produce many search results. The thing is that many of the tattoo sites aren't that great. The best websites are those you will need to pay a membership fee for, so be prepared to spend a little money when it comes to checking out quality online tattoo design galleries. Remember, it's a serious decision getting a tattoo, so chances are it will be worth it spending a little money to explore the net's best design galleries.

How to Find Good Tattoo Design Galleries
It's really easy! Just use your favorite search engine and type in terms such as, 'tattoo designs' or 'tattoo design gallery' and you will find a whole range of sites to check out. Remember as well that the characteristics mentioned in this article will help you sort the good online tattoo design galleries from the not-so-good galleries!

All the best with your search!

Off the Map Tattoo: Meet the Off the Map Tattoo Staff #4: Mary Bowen

It's hard to segway into this one because I'm talking about myself, so I suppose I will just say read on about me! I'm Mary and I'm the shop manager of Off the Map Tattoo!

 1. How long have you worked in the tattoo industry and how did you get started?

I started at the shop in June of 2007. It was actually a fluke how it got started really. I was searching for a new place to get tattooed and Off the Map Tattoo came up in google, when I was perusing for tattoos I saw an ad that they were hiring. I emailed on a whim, interviewed the next day, got offered the job and promptly quit my "real life" job of 8 years to start working at the shop. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made,

2. What is your favorite style of tattooing?

I'm particularly drawn to bio-organic and bio-mechanical tattoos. I love how they can be conformed to flow with the shape and form of all bodies regardless of shape and size. I am also a huge fan of really colorful and super solid traditional tattoos.

3. Who have you been tattooed by and who's on your wish list?

I have had the opportunity to be tattooed by so many tattoo artists. Since I started working at the tattoo shop I've been tattooed by Jeff Gogue, Guy Aitchison, Carson Hill, Johnny Berrios, Mike Cole, Orrin Hurley, Dee Dee Seruga, Timmy B, Durb, Shawn Hebrank, Nathan Kostechko, Tattoo Andy, Muriel Zao, and Paul Acker. As far as my wishlist, it changes a lot but some constants are Nick Baxter, Jeff Ensminger, Markus Lenhard, and Adrian Dominic.

4. If I wasn't working in the tattoo industry I would probably be:

Working with old folks or animals, which is what I was doing prior to the shop. I also work as a professional makeup artist on the side, since I also quit that job to work full time at the shop!

5. One piece of advice for someone looking to get tattooed?

Saying "ouch" doesn't make it hurt any less- meaning focusing on the pain isn't going to make it any better. Do you best to keep your mind on something else, bring music, a book, things that comfort you and things that will keep your attention. If all you pay attention to is the pain, it's going to be a long painful session. Don't psyche yourself out too much. Afterall, thousands and thousands of people have tattoos- so it can't be that bad.

Joe Capobianco: Tom Strom, Jeff Gogue Interview 1

Here's a bit of an interview the Baroness at Hope Gallery (Nichole) put together in preperation for our upcoming show Shedding Skin, The Art of Tom Strom, and Jeff Gogue. September 11, 2010

In preparation for his upcoming show with at Hope Gallery entitled “Shedding Skin”, painter and tattoo artist Tom Strom talks about his inspiration behind his paintings and even gives us some previews.

Why is the show entitled "Shedding Skin"?

The title of the show "Shedding Skin" has some duality for me, maybe not so much for Jeff. It comes from the title of one of my favorite Pantera songs. Being a long time fan of metal, I like to incorporate its themes and ideals into a lot of what I do. I also thought it gave a very appropriate name to our show being that we are both tattooers trying to be artists past our job title, essentially shedding our "tattoo" skin.

What is your inspiration or theme behind these works?

My inspiration as of lately seems to be focusing more and more on science fiction and a mixture of a lot of the nature around my home on Minnesota. I've always had an affinity for nature paintings and landscapes so I've been working on really creating atmospheres that we can all relate to. In that, I've been trying to create a narrative of some sort using creatures that are mutated or evolved in one way or another. Basically playing with the idea that as humans progress, we are only pushing nature to to find a way around us and prevail over the earth again. I've only just started working on this theme so these paintings are only the start of it.

Can you give us a background story for one of the pieces in the show?

I feel like I am only just starting to find my stride with a lot of my themes so it also led to a slower start in my painting. I've been painting most of these pieces almost every night over the summer. It's been a lot of long nights. I'd say it's been a summer long painting binge that realistically, I don't think will ever stop at this point. Whatever I'm doing right now, seems like the beginning.

How do you know Jeff Gogue?

At the end of all this, I have to be honest and say that Jeff is a bigger part of my painting inspiration. I've only gotten to know Jeff over the years through short encounters at conventions and a few phone conversations. What I do know about Jeff though is that he is an incredible painter with what seems to be an endless supply of motivation. He's influencing tattooers around the world to paint and move past tattooing which is not an easy task. Seeing that made me want to become more of a painter and really get focused. I owe Jeff some thanks and probably a drink!
