Celtic Design Tattoos - Not Only for The Irish

Tribal tattoos are pretty much the most common tattoo designs ever to be painted on human flesh. The first dated human to wear a tattoo was found in Italy – that tattoo over 5000 years old. Since the dawn of men – we were living together as tribes, having a tattoo was a saying about: who you are where you are from and what your status is within the tribe. No wonder then, that in the past five years the Celtic design tattoos have become one of the most popular flash art tattoos. Today there are thousands of Celtic symbols - each design has its own unique pattern and meaning.

Should you want to have a Celtic design tattoo, it's as easy as ordering pizza. Today there is a vast verity of symbols and designs one can easily find on the web, and with the growing internet community you should have no difficulty finding yourself a Celtic tattoo and even have a tattoo designed especially for you. There are also a lot of books – both about tattoos and other subjects - dedicated only for the Celtic designs.

Celtic tattoo art is inspired by traditional and original designs. For many years the Celts have mastered their skills in Knot work to perfection and although it is commonly believed to be an Irish craft – the Celtic knot work actually originated in India.

A Celtic design is a pattern which consists of a series of knots, when every knot pattern has a unique symbolic meaning taken from the Irish Celtic craft tradition. Until this day you can take a walk anywhere in Ireland and see for yourself the amazing level of perfection in the designs carved in the stones all around you. Tattoo designers all embrace themselves the unique style of the Celtic tattoos.

Today there are endless variations of the Celtic knot work and designs, and there are even more interpretations of each one. The Celts themselves didn't leave a lot of evidence regarding the interpretations of the symbols. Almost all interpretations were added later in history by all sorts of scholars and archaeologists studding the Celtic culture and by people who wanted to promote their business (such as tattoo shops, designers and souvenir outlets).

Kelly @ Off the Map Tattoo: Collaborative tattoos, Art Jams, and the taste of Werther's Originals

I woke up at 7am on my day off. I don't even believe in 7am so this is particularly cruel.

It could be that I'm still all hyper about this past week. Friday fellow resident Off the Map Tattoo artist Ben Reigle and I worked for 8 hours on a collaborative rib tattoo. I focused on the valkyrie herself, plus her wings, while Ben took on the script, "Guide me home, my valkyrie", the banners, the vines and the roses (which are in fact a fairly large coverup). Overall I think we're both very happy. And excited, to boot, as we got Tattoo of the Day at tattooNOW on January 31st! It was a lot of hard work and I know Ben and I were pretty sore, but no one is more badass than our customer, Patrick, who sat for 8 hours without flinching while two artists worked on him. Holy crap!

Last night Off the Map also hosted it's monthly Art Jam. I got there late, but the place was still packed with buttloads of talented artists. And everyone was having fun. I missed the pizza, which I'm assuming was probably the best pizza ever created by human hands. But I'm probably just assuming that because I didn't get any of it. I made a lot of progress on the second piece in the Machine vs. Vines series, the first of which can be seen in my original artwork gallery. And the spectacular, and super-talented Chloe Vanessa and I discovered a drink that tastes like old people! So it was a good night.

I've got a busy few weeks coming up. Some big tattoos I'll be starting, and some that I'll be wrapping up (including a Mucha-inspired backpiece I'm pretty rabid about). I've still got a few openings though, so e-mail me, call the shop (413-527-6574), or stop by and we can chat it up.

Dave Barton @ Coil Tattoo Gallery: Building Spaceships Daily

Lots of cool stuff going on this month! I have been working on a new series of conceptual paintings, and getting some new bio-mech paintings ready for an art show coming up. I have been pretty busy at the shop, doing lots of traditional pieces and a lot of Japanese stuff lately too. I'm also getting to tattoo more bio-mechanical and organic designs now too, they are fun. I should have a few finished this month to post some progress.

Also, a friend and tattoo collector made this video of us during one of his tattoo sessions. I thought it came out really rad. His name is Joey Kennelty and he's a really good graphic designer and has a clothing company called HUMAN. Check em out! Until next time, I'll be at Coil Tattoo Gallery on the daily schralp mission, and traveling to Detroit for the Hell City convention. Email me if you want to get zapped!
