Butterfly Tattoos – Beautiful Symbols of Life

With more women today getting tattoos, the popularity of butterfly tattoos has increased. Beyond the beauty of a butterfly tattoo, these tattoos can also be looked at as a symbolism, with the butterfly as a symbol of life.

For a butterfly, life starts as a caterpillar that creates a cocoon around itself. Once his transformation is complete, the caterpillar emerges from its cocoon, and debuts in the final stage of its life as a butterfly, free to fly wherever it chooses, as now the butterfly has completed the stages of life. Tattoos with butterflies could mean the bearer has finally completed their stages of life and are free, just like the butterfly. Another way to see this symbol is to view an infant as the caterpillar, the cocoon as death, and afterlife as the butterfly.

Ancient cultures saw butterflies as symbols of instability. Other cultures saw the journey the butterfly takes, and believed that butterflies were symbols of the journey from earthly body to heavenly body. The Greeks often used butterfly wings as symbols of the human soul. Some Native Americans believe that butterflies bring us our dreams during our sleep, and Christians compare a butterfly's metamorphosis to the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Near the Tibetan border, there is a place called Butterfly Springs. In the fourth lunar month, butterflies emerge from their cocoons by the thousands to hang on the branches of the recently blossomed trees. Legend has it that a pair of butterflies shows up annually at Butterfly Springs, and they are the spirits of a Bai maiden and her lover who committed suicide there. A tattoo with a pair of butterflies would most certainly be symbolic of eternal love.

A butterfly on a tattoo could be the instability in life, or the process of life. It could also be seen that the person tattooed with a butterfly has great dreams. Butterfly wings would be symbols of our soul, and a pair of butterflies is ideal for tattooing on yourself and your loved one to symbolize your eternal love.
